SAN DIEGO - Three San Diego State University students have cofounded a start-up that works with local disadvantaged artists to create clothing through their art. One of the founders of Art Without A Roof, Matthew Wayne, spoke with NBC 7 San Diego about the project and how they want to change the lives of homeless youths and inspire people to support local artists and causes.

San Diego’s homeless population rate dropped 4 percent last year, and organizations like this one have helped by funding local shelter and the homeless community. 10 percent of each item sold through Art Without A Roof go toward an organization partner, like ones that house or educate the homeless. Not only does the program provide monetary support, they hope to give the homeless a voice through art.

The group plans to expand the effort this June when they fully launch their website. The site will allow people to submit designs for shirts, choose a cause they wish to support, and donate or purchase the locally made apparel.
